Background
National Capital Region (NCR), India is home to numerous natural & human marvels. On the outskirts of Delhi, about 40 kms from the city-center lies the Upper Ganga Canal, an old waterway constructed by the British almost 170 years ago traversing through the NCR, providing clean water for parts of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and greater Noida.
We have witnessed the Yamuna and the Hindon become toxic & unsuitable for life over the years due to neglect. But somehow, the flowing natural mountain water from the Himalayas which traverses through the NCR as Ganga Canal survives, thus needs to be preserved in the interest of public health of citizens as it offers quality water for both urban and rural areas.
Save Ganga water for better future and sustainable livelihood development.
Issue & Actions taken
Unfortunately, in the recent times due to unchecked urbanization near the canal and increasing pilgrims, there is a looming threat to this water system especially from the increased dumping like religious waste, plastics, detergents etc. into the canal during Ganpati, Durga immersions etc.
With collaboration of local authorities, the idol immersions were only done in designated pond and main canal used for bathing only with footfall of 200,000+ as monitored by drone.
The cumulative waste from 1 MILLION PLUS VISITORS to these ganga ghats were cleaned up by our volunteers during annual canal shut down as a Diwali gift to citizens.
